Students from Alameda High School have released an Alameda-based cookbook featuring recipes from students, faculty, staff and community members.
The students are part of the high school's DECA non-profit, a local chapter of the national student organization which prepares high school and college students in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
They released the 290-recipe cookbook, titled "Delectable Dishes," on Dec. 13 and will be selling them in front of the Alameda Theater on Dec. 17 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. The books cost $20 and will be giftwrapped if purchased this month.
Part of the money raised from selling the cookbooks will go towards sending the organization's members to career development conferences where they compete against other schools across the nation. The students have also partnered with The American Cancer Society and plan to donate 10 percent of their profits to the organization.
"From the beginning of this entire planning process, we wanted not only to make a profit through our cookbook to help fund for our members to go to conference to compete against other schools, but to also give back to the community," Alameda High's DECA president Jeffrey Lee released in a statement.
If you miss tomorrow's cookbook sale, you can still purchase them by emailing [email protected].

Alameda DECA was just featured in the Alameda Sun with an article about DECA and their chapter. Let’s congratulate them for their splendid public relations efforts!

Let’s get down to business. DECA is an organization devoted to teaching high school and college students around the world all about the marketing world. The organization is helping Alameda High School (AHS) students emerge to become leaders and entrepreneurs. DECA prepares these students in marketing, finance, hospitality and management, and creates the business leaders of tomorrow by encouraging them to aspire higher.
DECA’s competitive events program allows student members to participate in competitions that apply learning, connect to business and promote competitive skills. These events make students academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible and experienced as leaders for college and future careers.
The week of Oct. 9 to 15 was national DECA week. AHS, however, celebrated DECA week from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4. AHS DECA members promoted their business club through events within the school with the help of AHS’s DECA advisor and marketing teacher, JoAna Sydow.
From giving Halloween goodie bags to hard-working teachers on Monday to helping members learn how to professionally put on a tie on Tie-a-Tie Tuesday, DECA let everyone at AHS know more about what they do.
To learn more about DECA, visit www.deca.org or www.cadeca.org. To learn more about DECA at AHS and get involved in community events, contact Sydow at jsydow@ alameda.k12.ca.us or call 337-7022, Ext. 5435.
